do now 12/15/14

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." ~Mahatma Gandhi

I want to make this world a better place by doing whatever I can to change the world for the better. My life goals include going to other countries and helping kids. I believe that this can change the world. If we all do something small at home we can make this world a better place. If we recycle we can make the earth last longer. If we spread peace there will be no fighting. We have to go one step at a time.

Fridays!!

My favorite restaurant is Fridays. The Fridays that I go to is on route 17. I like this particular Fridays because it is the closest to me and it takes me a few minutes to get there. I also know a few employees that work there so I try to go as often as possible. Also their food is phenomenal. Although they are a chain restaurant they always seem to make the food their own.
The food they serve is a mix of American and Italian. Their salads are really good but that it not my favorite dish. My favorite dish is the Californian club. It is a sandwich with avocado, ham, and lots of other amazing things.  If I don't get that I usually get their burgers which are always grilled to perfection. They never under or over cook the meat which makes me very happy.
Fridays is a chain restaurant that has been around since 1965. This is my favorite restaurant because it is close and easy to get to. They also have really good food and a great atmosphere. Also whenever I go I tell them that it is my birthday so that they sing to me. If this restaurant closed down I would most likely go to houlihan's because it is right next door to Friday's and it serves very similar food. I could eat at Fridays every day.

Chemists create clever rewritable paper

This is a revolutionary piece of paper. This is even better than recycling. People go through almost 400 tons of paper each year. This invention will help this issue. The writing is erased by UV heat and can be used multiple times before having to throw it away. It is not that much more expensive than regular paper. The most expensive part is the UV light which is a 1 time cost.

Geography

If I were a teacher I would teach geography. A lot of kids do not know where geographical locations are. This course would be very helpful. During this course we can go on trips around the world. This could help a lot of kids know where most county are. Also we can travel around america and learn about each state.
Our class would meet every day at a new location. The students could do activities that help them not just know where a place is, but why that place is important. We could listen to music from around the world. We can also eat food from different cultures. They can make posters about each country they learn about. This class would be fun.

Web 2.0: Wiki Research

How can a wiki be used a current class on your schedule (not this course)? Pick a class and be specific how the class could create and use a Wiki on a regular basis (tip: Use the Internet, here is a good source).
  • A wiki could be used in my anatomy class. We do projects a lot and sometimes we need to bring in supplies. This would be helpful to see who will bring in what.
What are the benefits of using a wiki in class?
  • Everyone can add information to the page.
  • Everyone can see what is on the page.

How can we create a wiki in this class, what would be contribute to it and how would be utilize it on an on-going basis?
  • A wiki can be used to see what everyone in the class is doing.
  • We would be able to contribute what everyone is doing for their blog post.
  • This could be used to make sure we are not all doing the same technology.
What experience do you have using or creating wikis?
  • In Ms.Garvins class we work on a wiki.

Snake Robots! Slithering Machines Could Aid Search-and-Rescue Efforts

One snake robot can shimmy up slippery sand dunes and go under heavy objects. This technology will be very helpful in search and rescue missions. It can also be helpful when they explore pyramids that people are not allowed to go into. This robot is modeled after a rattle snake and the way it moves. It will help us discover new things and help people.

IBM "sunflowers" to supply off-grid energy, water, and cooling

Looking more like a thirty three tall sunflower, IBM's High Concentration PhotoVoltaic Thermal (HCPVT) system concentrates the sun’s radiation over 2,000 times on a single point and then transforms 80 percent of that into usable energy. Using a number of liquid-cooled microchannel receivers, each equipped with multiple multi-junction photovoltaic chips, each HCPVT can produce enough power, water, and cooling to supply several homes. Swiss-based supplier of solar power technology, Airlight Energy, has partnered with IBM Research to utilize IBM's direct wam-water cooling design (adapted from use in IBM’s SuperMUC supercomputer), water adsorption technologies, and leverage IBM’s past work with multi-chip solar receivers developed in a collaboration between IBM and the Egypt Nanotechnology Research Center, to develop and produce the system.

Solarbox puts old London phone boxes to work charging your smartphone

Finally London phone boxes have a new purpose. People are working on making the telephone boxes able to charge your mobile device. They use solar panels for energy to charge the phone. They re-painted the phone box to make them look nicer. The stations are free to use so many people will use them. They estimate that you will get a 20% charge in 12 minutes. It is slightly slower than a cord but it is free to use. If you would like to see the original article go here.

Do Now 9/29/14

An editorial is a newspaper article written by or on behalf of an editor that gives an opinion on a topical issue. An editorial is a chance for a writer in a newspaper to somewhat give their opinion on a certain topic. A writer by the name of Bruce Maiman wrote an editorial about Wikipedia. Many of my teachers have told me about Wikipedia. They tell me not to use it because people can put in their own information in the articles. Many of these articles are said to be wrong because of this input of other peoples information.
Most of my teachers do not want me to use Wikipedia as a source. They do not allow it in research papers and if they allow it they strongly root against it. I have asked and my teachers have said that  they do not want me getting false information from the website. They think that because other viewers of the website can add their own content that it is automatically wrong. this is wrong to think because Wikipedia has changed and is getting better with their content.
My thoughts about Wikipedia have changed. I used to think that Wikipedia was bad because my teachers would never let me use it. Now I would not be scared to use it. I never understood why I was unable to use Wikipedia. Now I will use it as much as I want. I can show my teachers the editorial when they tell me that I cannot use Wikipedia as a source.

These features were not advertised in a big way so now people are discovering it themselves.

English III

My teacher for english three is Ms. Hunter. She has been working at this school for almost 8 years. She went to the college of New Jersey for her teaching degree. When the class first started I expected to learn about Shakespeare or another boring writer. Now I know that I will not be learning about that at all.

So far I have learned about the purdue OWL website to help me with papers that I will have to write for that class. Ms.Hunters grading policy is pretty simple. 40% is formal assessments, 40% performance based assessments, 10% homework, and 10% informal assessments.I like a lot of things about Ms. Hunters class. For example we work on the research paper very closely so that for history everything is perfect. I am excited to learn more in her class.

This year we will be using a lot of technology for English. Now that the school has chromebooks we will be using them alot. We will use them primarily to go on the purdue OWL page.We will also use them for turnitin, a website that we use to check plagiarism in our papers.  I am excited for this because the new chromebooks are tiny and easy to use.I am also excited for this year because this is the fourth time I have had Ms. Hunter and she has always been one of my favorites. She is very particular about punctuation. I hope English three is up to the standards that I have set for Ms.
Hunter. You can see what she has planned on her website.

Microsoft to stream Xbox games to PC browsers?

The tech firm at the Xbox offices are working to get their games to PC browsers. Microsoft is developing this technology to easily stream the Xbox games to your PC. Although this news has been rumored for a few weeks Microsoft is actively working on this technology. Last month, Microsoft Research published a report on a project named Outatime, which seeks to allow seamless gameplay over the company’s vast Azure cloud computing network. “The Xbox 360 games offer up the full experience, including the dashboard running in the browser too. So don’t think this is some hacked together project, this is the real deal. The product, as it stands right now, has Xbox branding and works outside the walls of Microsoft.”said the Microsoft offices.
